trolling motors

Our son pulled out an older trolling motor he had, 12 volt DC , and we mounted it on the back of our 10' inflatable dingy. It ran good but backwards, meaning in reverse the dingy went forward but a slower speed, turning the handle forward it went faster but pushed the dingy backward. the only way to make it work is to 180 degree the motor to go forward but the steering handle is now pointing backward and is hard to steer. We tried to reverse the power cables on the battery but it must have diodes in the curcuit, nothing happened. Our son says maybe its made only to put on the front of a boat to work right.
Any one have an idea to reverse this problem?

Sounds like you'll have to open it up and reverse the wires leading to the motor. Might be nice to shorten the shaft as well if that's practical.

in opening up the motor and reversing the leads inside.. be the same as
reversing the clamps at the battery? tried that an the motor doesn't energize at all, maybe having diodes in the circuit

No not the same. You need to go downstream of the controller and reverse the leads to the motor itself

Or put it on the front of the dingy.

i'll go past the controller and reverse the leads to the motor. sounds like that could work.
