Re: Tiny Powered Alternators & DC Generators
There are a few threads on here concerning coupling 400 or 500 amp eco-tech alternator's direct to small diesel motors making a very large dc charging supply for Lfp bank charging.
( just can't look them up on my tablet)

Re: Tiny Powered Alternators & DC Generators
I had a small gas powered two stroke DC generator in the 70s. I think it was called Tiny Tot or something like that. It was 12 volt only. It was basically a large model airplane motor and was so noisy that I had to leave the boat when it ran. It died a noisy death in Cabo San Lucas. With all of the small 4 stroke generators on the market, there is no reason to have an ear splitting high RPM unit. Just my 2 cents worth. ___Grant.

A Brushless DC motor, mechanically driven and without a controller, is a three phase alternator. Just sayin. You could take a 5kw Motenergy brushless motor, drive it at 3000 RPM, and probably get a sustainable 3kw out of it with a 5HP gasoline engine. Might not be the most efficient generator, but engine @ $200, ME0201014201 motor @ $400, a Lovejoy coupling and a baseplate to mount it on, and you have a dandy little 3kw DC generator for not a lot of coin. No regulation, though. Ditch the rectifier and add the normal motor controller and enable brake regen ($500, approx for controller) and you have a still more capable setup. In fact, if you also couple the motor to the shaft with belt and pulleys and a pump clutch, you have a small hybrid propulsion system.

Re: Tiny Powered Alternators & DC Generators
Hmm... The link says it is "12-volt max." So, does that mean it can generate the 14 or so volts required to recharge a 12-volt battery? Or does it really mean that it generates a maximum of 12-volts? If the latter, then it would be useful for running 12-volt devices, but NOT for recharging a 12-volt bank.
I would want to make certain of what "12-volt max" means before I bought one.

Re: Tiny Powered Alternators & DC Generators
They actually make tiny water cooled engines of 1-2 HP for RC boats and they make electric starters. Seems like you could make a cool little emergency charger with one. Of course you would have to modify the carb and ignition to be ignition proof somehow. I have considered you could also make one with a starter generator that could start the engine then switch to an gen.

Re: Tiny Powered Alternators & DC Generators
Figure 20A per horse at 12V at the low end.
Of course running a small engine at max output is not good for longevity.

my volvo me has that a dynostarter and it produces 11 amps out so not really the best for charging a house bank.

Re: Tiny Powered Alternators & DC Generators
11 amps would be fine in Absorption mode for smaller banks.
If it were small quiet and diesel it'd be great.

well an md1 or md2 are not known as quiet engines but it is my main not a genset.
That's what my solar is for.
