Re: Solar, generator, or nothing?

@hamburking: Have you ever considered fitting a bimini top on your boat?

Anyway, I like your KISS approach.

The only luxury I have on my boat is an electric winch for my lift keel and a small plotter.....

Regards,

-Richard

Re: Solar, generator, or nothing?

An Aussie trailer sailor has some good tips for solar and simple mods on his small sailer. You can find him on YouTube under Simon Carter. Humble guy and have used a couple of his ideas on my boat. Internet has a lot of characters willing to share their ideas on cheaper and more simple. I am 100 % convinced that trailer sailing is the best way to keep costs low and adventure areas are as close as your rig can pull your boat to. Marina boats are 95% restricted to vacation time versus hull speed in an arc from home port. Unless you are retired you ain’t going more than a couple of hundred miles ... if that.

Re: Solar, generator, or nothing?

Get a housebank (100Ah-ish). We cruise 2 people with fridge+daily 2 hours of tv + charging of 2x mobiles + 1x tablet and we do nothing but charge with engine power.

Our old bank of just 70Ah would last aprox. 2 days depending on how heavy the fridge use was. Charging with the inboard was no problem for us (2 week trip).

We since replaced the 70Ah with a 380Ah bank which is much overkill for a 30 foot boat that only has a fridge and small tv. But hey, we got it for free so can't complain
