Slavic wind generators

These caught my eye yesterday. In fact that's an understatement. They are so enormous the positively assaulted me visually. I've seen these before but never really dwelled on them, and I've never seen two together.

Discuss.

Re: Slavic wind generators

The largest set of vertical axis turbines on a sailboat that I have ever seen.

Re: Slavic wind generators

Maybe one day "electric sailboats", winds charge up the propulsion bank.

But they need to collapse though, fold in, if not for aerodynamics, at least IMO for aesthetics.

Re: Slavic wind generators

The pictures don't do them justice. They look even bigger in person.

Around @ $500 each, five feet tall. Even heavier than I thought, at 61 lbs. each. 400 watts each. 4.5 mph wind start up speed.

So that's a pretty cheap installation as far as wind power goes, although I have no clue as to their efficiency.

Re: Slavic wind generators

The latest thing in sailboat performance enhancements. Wind powered hover generators.
The stronger the wind blows, the more lift they produce, & the lift "lightens" the boat thus making it easier for the sail plan to propel it at greater velocities.
Look for US Sailing to ban them on racing boats by month's end

Re: Slavic wind generators

Reminds me of the Independence Energy Concepts system I was looking into last year to take my tiny house off grid.

Re: Slavic wind generators

5 feet tall and mounted over the top of a solar panel by the looks, how is that going to work?

Re: Slavic wind generators

I've been watching them as the boat is still sitting at the dock waiting for some work to be done. They do move in fairly light air from what I can see and are essentially silent at all wind speeds. So they have that going for them.

Don't like the look but love Oriental! Great little sailing town. Sailed my cat 22 from new bern to there and loved it!

Not on a boat (but if you had a powerboat, or never left the hook...), but if I remember correctly, it generates in 1.3 kts, and uses convection to spin the turbine on hot windless days. Pretty innovative.
