Single 12v Deep Cycle battery. Which is best these days?

I’ve used Trojan t105s most of my life.

I heard these are out of stock lately. And in any case, I need a single 12 V battery. It’s not for a boat. It’s for an RV.


Any suggestions on some 12 V battery that is good and reasonable cost these days?

I have two series 27 deep cycles (which I used for winter tie over to save the good batteries since solar panels keep them up nice and charged all winter) that may have given up the ghost just recently. Bilge pump switch got stuck in up position due to deep freeze. I was going to pump the bilge dry but something important came up that I had to leave and never got back to the boat to finish drying the bilge, forgetting that I needed to do it.

They were purchased in 2010 and 2014 respectively. One Interstate the other I forget but brand name. Funny enough both were from Walmart for under $100 each. And also funny enough 2010 was always the better one of the two, even now in their semi-dead state. Go figure.

I bought 12V 'Golf Cart Batteries' that had 150 Amp Hr rating from Batteries plus Bulbs. It was the largest capacity I could find that fit into a 'standard' battery box size. They are $300ea now, I got them at about $260 5 years ago. Of the 3 I used for my house bank, one had a bad cell and B+B replaced it, but is was a PITA. Other than that, I used them for 4 years and noticed no significant degradation or other probs... then sold the boat.

I have used the Walmart 12V deep cycle Marine for years. I have used them for trolling motors and to power electric fence chargers. They last for several years and can be replaced at any walmart which is a plus for an RV

The inflation/supply chain issue pricing is looking absolutely outrageous to me, so cheap (but adequate) is the way she will be going.

I would be cautious with Interstate batts when looking for deep cycle as the OP said that’s what he’s looking for.
My experience is limited to their 8D MHD model. Interstate only seems to offer Start batteries, not deep cycle. This is evident as they only list CCA data and not 20hr amp hour ratings for their batts. 20hr amp hour rating is the gold standard for deep cycle batts.

I was stuck with buying Interstate because I was in a rural area, Drummond Island, MI and was short on time. As this was the only brand the marina had available, I did a little research. Called Interstate directly after finding no amp hour data on their web site. Was told they don’t have data like that for their batts. They put me in contact with one of their distributors who had a funky mathematical formula that attempts to derive an amp hour value. To this day I don’t know the real amp hour rating, I think my 8Ds are about 100 to 150 amp hours. Not nearly enough for a house bank. They work great as start batts for my Cat 3208TA’s.

Thanks. I never looked beyond the 8D MHD back when I was stuck with this bat as my only option. Interstate doesn’t make a deep cycle 8D anyway.

IMHO the OP can do better than an Interstate 98 ah group 31. Rolls has a 130 ah group 31. More $$$ I suspect.

I used FLA Rolls, 20 years from them on a mooring without solar 18 of those years, and replaced with similar FLA Rolls

I just upgraded a friend's Rv with 400 watts of Solar and new batteries. I replaced the 12v battery with 2 6v golf cart batteries in series. I don't know about inflation, but the gc2 batteries were less than $100 apiece at Sam's Club, and were 200ahr.

Thanks for that. I haven’t been in there yet, but I do believe there is only room for a single standard 12 V battery. It’s a class B RV, so space is at a premium.

Does anyone have the exact specifications on the Walmart deep cycle batteries? Amp hours? I think I need a group 27 for size.

Does anyone have a link to the Walmart battery? I see several of them when I search. I’m not sure which one you guys are using.
