Re: Running a 12V VHF Radio off a 24V system?
I used to distribute alfatronix. Good units.

Make a simple voltage divider 24 to 12V. Costs less then $0.50
Google it.

Sure, a simple voltage divider can be made for less than 50 cents but it ain't going to work for a 12V VHF radio...
I'm with s/v Jedi here, it is an unbelievable proposition but maybe you can detail the proposed circuit because I haven't been successful with google approach.

Yes you need to install a step down converter. This is not uncommon on boats over 50'

Re: Running a 12V VHF Radio off a 24V system?
We have both 12v and 24v systems onboard. The 12v powers the vhf, ssb, propane controller, 12v fans, portable vhf chargers, etc. Everything else is 24v. The 12v system has a single, small (group27) battery, which is charged by a 24v->12v converter and by a 230vAC-> 12v charger (3 bank charger - it is also backup charger for genset and auxiliary starting batteries). This system gives redundancy, plenty of current, and both 12v and 24v supplies are available. The downside is complexity and you need the space for it.

Well I want run exactly the same 12V gear on my yacht and I wondered if I should follow your lead. But after seeing what a Tayana 58 DS looks like I think I'll stick to my original plan (no offense)

All you need is a step down voltage regulator/ convertor can be purchased on Amazon. $20 to $50. It is a common item on 24 volt boats.

Yes! I've decided to go down that track after reading Comment #3 But I prefer these converters (and that is what I have ordered)
