Other than the obvious advantages of lifepo4 , what tipped the balance to relion.

I'm just going to say it... we didn't really look around. Just Catamarans did the install of the batteries, our arch, and solar panels. Just Catamarans is also a reseller for Relion, I'm sure.

We have 4 Relion 12.8V 300Ah batteries connected in series-parallel. Our overnight draw is about 14 amps per hour. If we have the engine room lights on, we're at around 22 amps per hour, so we turn them off usually overnight. The ice maker also sucks quite a bit of power, so we don't run it often and store ice in the freezer once it's made.

What is Amps per hour? Your gear either draws 14A or 22A or do you drain the battery by 14Ah or 22Ah per night at 24V or 12V?

Ah means (Amps * hours) not Amps per hour (A/h).
Amps per hour makes no sense technically.

Hehe, so much for trying to help.

Peace out

Re: Relion

You might consider a retrofit of led bulbs in the engine rooms and infact all over the boat .
Thnks for your help.
As much as it can seem that people geek out on using the correct language to describe situations,I have found that when using a forum such as this ,it helped me when I tried to use the correct terminology

Re: Relion

Well the final verdict is in , and I did indeed kill my Firefly batteries, I want to stress that in it was NOT anything to do with the batteries.

I am bumping this thread in hopes of hearing more about people’s experience with the Relion batteries. It will be a choice between the Firefly,or Relion .
Thank you

Not sure how the price compares, but the Lithionics pack I installed two years ago performs as new. Very happy with them.

Sure it does! I'm a BSEE and I frequently use "amps per hour". Why?

1) Amps and amp-hours require a time period to be meaningful in power discussions.
2) No one uses the more accurate description of "X coulombs per hour"
3) "X amp hours per hour" is redundant. Why multiply by time and divide by time?
4) "X amps for an hour" takes to much effort for this lazy American so please ignore that the preposition "per" means divide most of the time

It all makes sense, if used contiously.

A (Amps) is the currently flowing current (nice one).

Ah (Amp hours) is a proxy for measurement for the energy transferred, it is Wh divided by the mean Voltage during an undefined period of time.

Ah/h (Amp hours per hour) is an expression of the mean draft of energy for devices, like fridges, that use the power not continously, but in on / off manner. You cannot estimate the demand by simply multiplying the Wattage by Time.

Amp-hr / hr = amps.

Mathematically correct, in engineering technically, not so much.

Assume a device 12V and 1200W, It draws 100A when on.
Asume, it is running on intervals 10% of the time and in standby 90%.

It will draw 100A when running and 0A in standby, median energy consumption will be 10Ah/h. The maximum load will be of course 100A. It will never run on 10A.

Means in 24h it will consume 240Ah.

Re: Relion

My electric utility has never sent me a bill for usage in kilowatts per hour, always in KWH. CatNewBee has said it correctly. Amps per hour is like saying "I have 6 knots of fuel in my tank"

Your utility company doesn't bill per kWh. They bill in kWh used over a time period ... which is normally a month. Why? Because 1 kWh can mean you used 1 W for 1000 hours or 1 kW for 1 hour. Since there are only 720 hours in a month, the time period in this example would be important for billing. The same logic applies to amps, amp-hours, watts and watt-hours because they are all time dependent rates and not scalar quantities like joules or coulombs.
