Pacific Scientific 12v motor

Hello All,
My latest problem is I have a PS 12v 1/2HP 1800 rpm motor BA3630-7006-7-56B which powers my Grunert fridge/freezer. I have just had it reconditioned but the electrician failed to take note of which way the power cables were attached. The brush holder can fit in 2 ways so the markings on the case may be reversed. If the motor is sitting on it's feet & I am looking straight at the brush holder is the positive post on the left or the right? Does anyone know or have a fail safe way of determining which is which? I have emailed Kollmorgan & hope they will reply.....but.......

Re: Pacific Scientific 12v motor

I have a 1/2 hp BA3628 24V same make.
It is running bath ways when switching +and-.
So it doesn't matter for the motor..
It matters maybe for the compressor....
So you can test the motor to see which way It is turning, I think....

Maybe give these guys a call.
Not an email, a "real" call where you talk to a human.

Re: Pacific Scientific 12v motor

Good info, thank you both for your speedy response. I have a Grunert AR-50-12 unit...very old!.... does anyone know which way the compressor needs to run. From memory & seeing it run, I think it is counter clockwise, if looking directly at the motor & the unit where the drive belt is.

Re: Pacific Scientific 12v motor

If all else fails:

Run the motor in both directions and observe brush sparking. Set the brushes to minimize sparking in the preferred direction.

This assumes that the brushes can be positioned for optimum timing. However in many small dc motors, the brushes are not adjustable, so neither rotation direction is favored.

Regarding compressor rotation direction: If there is a belt drive, the tension will be on the slack side of the belt. Also often, there will be a rotation arrow somewhere on the casing. Good luck.

^This.
Many of the old Tecumseh/Blissfield compressors had an arrow on the flywheel/pulley.
They do need to run in the proper direction as the oil pick-up for the connecting rod bearing on the crank is a "scoop" type.
They really are antiques, but as long as the crank seal holds-up they'll last basically forever.
