Open Frame Vs Marine Genset?

I have the option to install a marine 3 phase genset or an open frame Cummins genset of similar output for about half the cost. The open frame takes a little more volume (which I can manage), and obviously needs an insulated space and requires minimal conversion to keel cooling. Any reason not to go open frame?

"Marine" may mean ignition protected, which the open frame may not be. As well as different metals or construction. You'd really have to look into the details. Assuming these are both gasoline powered, Cummins might have the important parts for ignition (explosion) protection available to beef it up.

Sorry, forgot to mention both are diesel.

You can convert a radiator based open frame genset to keel cooling fairly easily, but that isn't the end of the story.

You then need to rig a dry stack exhaust which requires an air cooled chimney (for lack of a better word) to pass the exhaust hose through. And then you still will not have a water cooled exhaust manifold. That means a lot of extra (and dangerous) heat in the engine compartment.

These are some of the reasons why marine generators cost more, but are worth it.

So by the time i have done keel cooling and wet exhaust i have spent as much as marine set. Hmmm good reason

Having used both, spend the money on the quiet one, its worth the extra.
