That was written in 2014 and didn't get very technical.
The "lithium-ion" batteries discussed were actually Lithium Cobalt.
Do some research and you will find several different mixes for lithium cells.
Boaters are using lithium iron phosphate which won't cause thermal runaway.

Big differences in the various mixes.
