Re: New Generator or Lithium?

Hi there,

May I suggest that you look at https://integrelsolutions.com/.

This company specialises in getting the most from your vessel motor in the way of electrical power. They have some very interesting "teaching" videos that may give you some ideas.

Re: New Generator or Lithium?

So many great posts on this thread. Thanks!

Question: is it better to install an external alternator regulator or install a DC to DC charger instead?

Those are completely different things, what are you asking?

Re: New Generator or Lithium?

These points may have been addressed already but:From experience, it is unlikely that you will get 1kW from a "1kW" genny. Even sustained 720 may kill it. Also, DC-DC charger will likely try to draw maximum power even when the input voltage dips, and DC power from genny will probably be rectified single-phase sine wave. This will probably not suit the converter unless you have a big capacitor (several Farads) too.

If you install a new alternator you may want to chose one with an external regulation, regardless the potential LFP charging plan. In my case, I didnít want to replace or add an alternator and wanted things to stay as simple as possible, so the LFP bank is to be charged offshore by a dc/dc charger from the starter AGM battery and from the solar MPPT controller.

Re: New Generator or Lithium?

Yes a DC to DC charger running off the start battery sounds like the simplest and cheapest solution, although you might squeeze a bit more juice out of your alternator by installing an external regulator with temperature sensor.
