New AC in a Teak vessel

Hello,

A mate of mine has purchased an old 49 foot teak vessel (Chinese Junk) and wants to turn it into a live aboard that they can also take out for Saturday and Sunday day trips around the islands here in Hong Kong. The vessel is on a swing mooring that will have power and water run to it next week.

There are no AC circuits or shore power connection currently, and only the 24 volt battery bank for the single 208 CAT engine. There is a small Honda generator that has a car battery charger to it for emergency.

Today we had the new house bank batteries (two 12v 200Ah) we have connected in series for a 24 volt bank.

Before the end of the day we had installed a 32Amp (230v AC 50Hz) shore power inlet plug, a Shore/gen switch, a AC breaker panel. A Victron Centaur 24v 30Amp charger.

As we sat and drank a beer planning the tasks for tomorrow, we were thinking about the grounding.

The Shore Power will get the ground from the main cable coming from the shore service, we are not sure where we should connect a ground wire from the small generator that is there...

As a temporary fix, we would run the AC wire to the Shore/Gen switch so the AC breaker panel is the main path to the Victron 24v 30Amp Centaur Charger.

Thanks,

Alan

Hello,

Well... We have the DC still grounded to the CAT engine, and the AC has a new 6mm ground wire run to the Rudder shaft.

Everything is working well !!!! I installed a reverse polarity light as well.

Now it is time to do the carpentry work and turn this into a cozy live aboard !!!

Sorry to trouble the forum with this question !!!

Have a nice weekend !!!

Alan
