Need a little guidance with battery monitor

I bought and installed a trilithic battery monitor. It said to run the neg wire to the shunt. On my battery there is the big neg cable and a smaller wire which I assumed was from the battery charger. Originally I moved the small wire to the shunt along with the cable because they were tie wrapped together. Hooked up like this, it would show how many amps I was using but wouldn't show the batteries charging and the percent left would slowly dwindle down to nothing despite being on shore power. I moved the small wire back to the battery and now it shows charging but not amps being used.

So, how do you hook these things up correctly?

Hi, thanks for the link, but that manual was included with the unit. I'm wondering if all the wires on my neg bat terminal are moved to the shunt or just the main cable. It doesn't specify in the instructions.

The web link manual did specify here:

IMPORTANT
: Be sure the
negative lead from your
solar charge controller is
NOT connected here-- but
to the other side of the
shunt. Otherwise the
TriMetric will not measure
your solar amps.

And here:

TO CHARGING SYSTEM (SOLAR PANELS including
controller, CHARGER, ETC.) AND ALL LOADS
(INVERTER, ETC.)

And here:

SYSTEM GROUND (if used)
Be sure the minus terminal of charge controller, inverter,
and all other loads and chargers connect here (not the

negative post of battery).

These notes are all on the wiring diagram at the end of the manual. All those notes point to the far side of the shunt from the batttery. So there should be no other wires on the battery side of the shunt. Did you put some on one side and some on the other?

John

Aqua, there should only be one cable on the battery side of the shunt, and that is the cable from the shunt to the battery.
