Re: My wife needs reassurance

This seems like a waste of time and sense of security for $100.

Re: My wife needs reassurance

If there is any electrical leakage, you may introduce stray current corrosion on your boats underwater fittings or induce the same in other boats in the marina.

In worst case, you could electrocute a diver nearby who is cleaning boat bottoms....

Re: My wife needs reassurance

Im thinking a happy wife would be an extra $100 well spent.

Re: My wife needs reassurance

We use Marinco Eel cords. I have 50' and 25' cords. When stern in I can use just the 25', if bow in, I have to add the 50s. The eel cord has connectors that 'screw' together and create a water tight seal.

Re: My wife needs reassurance

Think i agree w Ann (JPA Cate).

I have two different lengths of shore power cables in order to avoid an exposed connection partway down the pontoon. If you are worried about yr connection i would 1)make sure it is 110% dry then 2) generously wrap it with self-vulcanising tape, making sure that you work yr way along far enough each side of the joint. The self vulcanising tape needs to be stretched about 2-3 times its length before you start wrapping to get the best result. Very effective.

OK, you've convinced me to replace, rather than repair, my shore power cord. Thanks for all the input!

I'm with "grantmc" I do not own anything close to a Nauticat 43, but certainly would not hesitate spending the $200, and the fact that your spouse has expressed concern should have settled the issue unless you prefer sailing singlehanded.

I take it you can't seem how to back your boat into the slip... If you did then you wouldn't need a 75 foot cord.

+1 on the wiring job of creating a scary redneck connection. You do not know if the wires (the 25' and 50') are rated to 75' and never mind the crimp connectors... This is AC not DC.

Re: My wife needs reassurance

An alternative to the heavy 100' of shore power cable is to use a 100' 12 gauge power cord with adapters. This should be adequate for everything except air conditioning. And, much easier to store. Make sure the cable is 12 gauge and not 14 or 16 gauge.
Your splice job should be fine so long as it is not submerged. Use it until a marina objects and then switch to the above.

I am an electrical engineer and certainly would not spend the money for a longer shore cable unless I had to.

Re: My wife needs reassurance

Don't you also have to factor in a dollar figure representing how much you like your wife?
More seriously, it sounds as if you've reached the right decisiopn given your worries. You're most likely sailing because you enjoy it, so reducing worry is worth a good bit.

I don't have a problem backing my boat, which is 50 foot LOA (including bowsprit and dinghy davits) and center cockpit- 50 foot cord has only worked on side ties.

We are full time cruisers who anchor most of the time and every dock we visit is different!

Nice to hear from an electrical engineer! Our boat is 50amp capable but I use a 30amp adapter because we don't need that much AC power and the 50amp cable is a beast to store and deploy.
