More 4108M fun - temperatures

Our 4108M runs a little hot. After replacing the entire cooling system and exhaust, I am focusing on the gauge and sender.

I have noted that the gauge is VDO but the sender is WEMA.

Sender is stamped M14X1.5 150124 WEMA

I have heard that VDO gauges should be paired with VDO senders.

(Q) could this be a mismatch causing the error?

Second thing I tried was a IR gun on the sender. The temp gauge reads 91. The hottest I could get on the IR gun on the sender was 81. I would expect a little digfference but not 10 degrees.

(Q) What difference might one expect between the top of the sender and the temp measured by the sender in the coolant?

I read the thread because I have a 4 108.

Some good finds in that. I think it would be prudent to match the sender. Especially since they are so cheap.

Very prudent IMO.

FWIW, the VDO Viewline 120C temp gauge was not compatible with the WEMA sender when I replaced some gauges last year. I needed the VDO sender, about $40 (au) IIRC.

The sender and gauges have a "sender ground" - can all gauges sender ground go to a common busbar - or should each sender go to only that gauges ground?

Usually a common ground unless your engine is ground independent (ie the engine chassis is not connected to the battery negative).
