Re: Mega fuses between batteries

There are several US manufacturers of fuses that are UL listed (even Little Fuse makes a not so little class T). There are US manufacturers of listed fuse holders. Suspect there is not a specific UL marine listing. Other than gasoline vapor issues (no place for a fuse anyway) probably nothing special. I have seen some imported stuff that looks pretty shoddy. Big fuses don't often fail so using good stuff is not a big cost issue. Higher premiums for "marine rated" stuff is as old as the universe. Some justified and some not. Bet the Indians charged extra wampum for logs if they were going to be used for building a canoe.

No point in throwing money away but nobody ever said messing with boats was a cheap hobby. Fun maybe but never cheap.

Re: Mega fuses between batteries

I work with 1 or 2 mw of batteries quite often, they are never fused apart from between individual banks normally spit into 3 banks that have 3 racks per bank.
Only the 9 sets are fused.
But it’s very true that a bad connection or short is a disaster. When new we fully load them until the inverter quits, this gives a lot of information to prove supply and redundancy and also allows Thermal Imaging of the batteries sometimes find one that gasses off or the connections are almost red hot, these just get replaced but we never retest as the batteries don’t like it very much.
People on here always saying how dangerous Propane or Petrol is but any huge source of power is not without its risks batteries included.
Look after them and the connections, but fused between batteries are probably overkill

Re: Mega fuses between batteries

People keep talking about batteries shorting." Unless you are one of the very few people using large 2 volt cells, your battery bank consists of 2 volt cells connected in series to yield higher voltage. The groups of series connected cells can then be connected in parallel to yield more capacity(current).

If you have 6 2-volt cells in series ( a 12-volt battery), all that happens if one cell "shorts out" is that you suddenly have a 10-volt battery. If you charge it from 12 or more volts, it will eventually overheat. If you’re not charging it, it will simply put out reduced voltage. In neither case, will it draw "too much current."

Fusing the individual strings of cells has the advantage of using smaller fuses than would be required for the combined bank.

Re: Mega fuses between batteries

1996 Dodge 2500 4x4 Cummins.
Factory dual-batteries.
No fuses...
* on the cable connecting the two batteries into a yuge bank,
* betwixt bank and starter,
* betwixt bank and ground on frame.
.
Should I worry [clutches pearls, runs tiny circles while flailing soft hands]?!?
