Mastervolt BBQ Anyone??? - What new charger to I invite to the party?

Maybe it's just an internal fuse....

Or...

Maybe a loose or corroded terminal...

I know what I was told... But juuuuust maybe there was a bit of exaggeration or mis-remembering.... Sparking fire... Pshaw....

I'll just open her up and take a peek for myself...

OK... So now that I've determined this is not a "sailor serviceable repair"

What say you electrical gurus on a recommended replacement???
Same MASS24/100?
Magnum?
Sterling?
other?
(Notice I left off the X brand)

230 in, but I could buck it down
24 out 4x245ah AGM's = 980ah + ACR'd (2) 31's

SadMdRSailor
(ps money IS an object)

AND NOooooooo.... A Mai Tai was able to fix this!

Its amazing what one wee drop of salt water can accomplish. For the money, I'm an X-man.

Having owned X, Outback and Victron, I would go with Magnum.

BTW, that is frightening. Do you know the cause?

Indeed the case Don... I also am not 100% convinced X is out... Just when the stories are bad, the tellers are pretty emotional... I had an old X that gave me fits... but we are talking 20 yo combi technology...

Thanks Mark!
Still reading (what 10 hrs?) Victron got more cred than I gave it... Mag seems to be the charger de jeur

I absolutely know the cause... LUNACY.... engine room bulkhead mounted... level... parallel... AND 12" away from the driveshaft...

boat took on water... as boats are known to do on occasion...

So far I'm pretty happy with my Victron inerter/charger. Some initial issues with programing but after I got that figured out it has been rock solid.

Dockhead might offer a slightly different opinion. He seems to have picked up a lemon or he just has a little black cloud that followed his Victrons.

Hi Skip...

Yea... That seems to be the resounding theme of of the major players... Despite fantastic dependable service/performance for 95% of the different brand owners, there appears to be a few bad apples in every cart...

I've read DH's woes, and it's definitely painful... I like the Vic stuff on paper, and the positive experiences reported...

Thanks for your input BUD!!!

Just a bit more about the Victron, I have the inverter/charger, isolation transformer, battery monitor and solar MPPT controller (not yet installed). Have pulled the covers off the big boxes and the construction is beautiful. Very clean layout, nice straight wire runs, tight soldering and this is from an EE who can more or less tell the difference.

Except for the initial installation problems all have been trouble free.

By the way, have I ever asked where in north MS you are? I grew up in Jackson and used to go hunting and fishing around Greenville and Yazoo City.

Skip

PS
That was a pretty impressive little hot spot you had. Good thing it didn't BBQ your boat.

Sounds like you're in Victron's good graces, and it's all working super for you... Definitely a compelling argument! Pretty great that you give it such high marks in construction ...

I'll need an isolation trans and an inverter sometime in the near future, thanks for the feedback on these too (I'm personally still gunshy about putting all of my eggs in one charger/inverter combi)

In Corinth on Pickwick, born n bred So Cal beach boy tryin' to make the inland South work for now!

re the PS: no doubt huh? It happened to the PO among multiple simultaneous pressing matters!

Thanks again man...

Re: Mastervolt BBQ Anyone??? - What new charger to I invite to the party?

UPDATE!

Mixed feelings as I was hoping to tango with a new partner...
Taking advantage of some tech advances....

BUT...

I scored a major deal on a gently used and tested exact replacement !

Thanks Vladimir !

+1. We have a Magnum MS2012.. have had no issues and it's a great piece of kit. I know the "E" suffix is also available now for adventures 230V/50Hz...
