Lug crimper, FTZ or Ancor
Hello, Im shopping for a lug crimper, Im looking at the FTZ 24284 or the Ancor 703040. Up her in Canada its seems easier to get the Ancor lugs that match with their crimpers than it is the FTZ,s lugs.
I did not find a lot of real world review on the Ancor units, most go for the FTZ, I can get both crimpers for roughly the same price. Any input would be appreciated.

Re: Lug crimper, FTZ or Ancor
We made a lot of battery cables at my store. I tried several crimpers before I broke down and spent the money for an Anchor 702040 crimper. I like that it is adjustable in fine increments. It will work with thick wall or thin wall lugs. It is expensive.

From which distributor are you ordering the FTZ lugs in Canada ? And did you get your crimper from them also.

Re: Lug crimper, FTZ or Ancor
I use the big FTZ crimper and the Ancor double crimper to cover the range from 4/0 ga. down to 22 ga. I have six L-16 FLA 6 VDCs in series-parallel and the FTZ, despite its price, paid for itself. I use the Ancor for 10 ga and down, i.e., "back of panel stuff". Both tools are worth the price and give excellent results.

Re: Lug crimper, FTZ or Ancor
If it's battery lugs you mean, I saw some posts here and there saying Ancor's quality in both lugs and the small-sized crimper has become variable, as if they were getting their products made by various overseas job shops, with the usual result. I don't know this for a fact, but I went with the larger FTZ crimper for this reason.
As for lugs, it's reassuring to hear that FTZ is a division of Ilsco, because I'm a dry-land electrician in real life, and I've never gotten a bad part from Ilsco. They're top-notch. I'm making a set of battery cables in a few days, and I'll be using FTZ heavy-duty battery lugs.
Edited to add: Obviously, this was intended as a response to the OP, not to masonc. Sorry.

Re: Lug crimper, FTZ or Ancor
For battery and other large cables, I've had good success using a no-name 16-ton hydraulic crimper purchased off ebay.
Sometimes takes a test crimp or two to figure out the correct size die to use, but then the results are (I think) very good. It's also usable in some smaller spaces where you might not be able to operate a long-handled mechanical crimper.
