Lithium Portable Lithium Battery Pack Charging

Question about charging of those lithium portable battery banks vs. charging your boat lithiums...

I noticed that the reviews for portable lithium based battery storage systems (like the GoalZero Yeti) that the charging starts out quickly with a lot of amps going in but gradually reduces like you would see happening with a lead acid battery.

I always thought that lithium batteries could be charged at their maximum rating until full and there would not be a trail off in acceptance. For example, Battleborn says that their batteries will take up to 100A (+/-5%) until the BMS signals a "short circuit".

Is this incorrect?

Re: Lithium Portable Lithium Battery Pack Charging

Hi, I would think it's down to the chemical makeup of the battery and also what the bms is programmed to do along with the controller that is doing the actual charging....

Will prowse on youtube did a strip down and review on the goal zero. Might be worth a watch?

Re: Lithium Portable Lithium Battery Pack Charging

It really depends on the specific lithium chemistry, and whether you're trying to operate in the 100% charge range or using a PSOC regime that stops at 80-95% capacity. If the latter then you'll see fast charging with a stop while still at relatively high current, if the latter there is a tail just as with LA, although generally much shorter.

The GoalZero is Li-NMC, a "typical" full charge profile looks like this:

Most users on CF deal with LiFePO4 chemistries and most subscribe to the "don't get to 100% regularly" charging regime.
