Re: Lights Schematics for Sailboat Under 20'

You missed a light....the cabin light.

The cabin light should be the TOP switch on the panel, so you can find it easily in the dark.

I'd also suggest a 12volt barrel style outlet, and a USB port (or 2).

In the 12 volt outlet, you can plug in an inexpensive ($5) digital voltmeter, so you always know your volts. Its also handy for charging your handheld rechargeable VHF, or powering your handheld GPS.

Re: Lights Schematics for Sailboat Under 20'

I wanted to narrow my post down to the navigation lights wiring. But yes, I do have all of these extras planned on the electrical panel and a few more...

Thanks for the suggestions though.

The rotary switch idea is neat, but three switches (or breakers acting as switches, as I have)
- Navigation lights (red + green + white sternlight)

- Steaming light (white forward)

- Anchor light (white all-round)

is pretty simple also.

Nav when moving,

plus "steaming" when motoring (which Jeanneau refers to on my panel as "Feu de hune"!),

then both off and Anchor when ... anchored.

If the above is actually too complicated for the other users of the vessel (which I grant you is not impossible), I would be concerned about their abilities in other regards as well. Might I suggest USPS or CPS-ECP courses?

It's not a function of it being too complicated for me, it's a function of eliminating accidents when cold, wet, tired or by in experienced crew. Or just a plain bumping the wrong switch in passing.

I have received the switch. It came with 2 external jumpers and 3 intermnal ones. The external ones were easy to remove.

I couldn't figure out why pairs of odd numbered terminals were shorting pairs until I opened the switch and found the jumpers. Unfortunately I got a bunch of loose pieces mixed up.

I'm trying to get everything back together at this point. Failing that I will try to figure out if I can cut 1 or more internal jumper without taking it apart. I may need to get another switch. At some point I will try to create a video about this for anybody that also wants to use this rotary switch.
