Inverter different voltage to Windlass / Winches

The boat will use a 48V battery to power the Inverter, however the Winches & Windlass operate on 24V, so I can see 2 possible solutions :

1. install a 24V battery and a 48V battery
2. install a 48V battery and 48V-24V step-down DC-DC converter

I am uncertain which way to go and welcome thoughts / comments.

Change the load devices so they all work from the same voltage range.

Re: Inverter different voltage to Windlass / Winches

A DC-DC converter that can supply the startup current of a windlass is likely to be prohibitively expensive, so I'm afraid you'll need an energy buffer anyway. A small lead-acid starter battery ought to be sufficient.

Something like:
48V battery --> 120A DC-DC step down charger --> 60Ah 24V SLA --> winches and windlass

As a plus, an extra battery gives you an emergency buffer in case your DC-DC converter kicks the bucket. A low-voltage alarm on the small SLA to indicate failure might be useful in that regard.

Re: Inverter different voltage to Windlass / Winches

As far as I know, winches and windlass have a very high current. I'm not sure you can find an affordable 48-24V converter that can withstand this current.
In my opinion, you need to buy a powerful simcasts 24 V battery and a DC and DC charger to supplement it from 48 V. I do not know how real it is, but if the devices are high quality, they will work.

1. Change the equipment to 48V. If not possible.
2. 48V-24V step-down DC-DC converter and a small battery. The DC-DC doesn't need to be very big so long as it can top up the battery in the hours between uses.
