Inverter Charge issue

I have a Xantrex 1500 freedom marine 15 inverter/charger unit, with an external remote. The other day I notice the charger putting out around 16 volts of power when the charger kicks in on shower power. I'm guessing the charging unit is having an issue. This unit is from 2007. I have to wonder if it is worth fixing, or should be used as only and inverter. I'm wondering if I should just buy a battery charger. Anyone got advice, and what unit might be a good replacement if I go that route.

Re: Inverter Charge issue

I woiuld measure the voltage at the batteries and charger output with a meter. to see if it's just a screen error.

if it's really 16v you are messing things up.

Re: Inverter Charge issue

Yes I did that. The battery is definitely getting 16 volts from the inverter\cbarger

Re: Inverter Charge issue

If it has a battery temp sensor you can unplug it and see if anything changes. Though it should never hit 16 even with extreme temp comp.

Re: Inverter Charge issue

No temperature sensor, so no plug to remove. Does anyone know if it is worth fixing one of these units or is it better to just buy a new one. Any recommendations on a good replacement inverter.

Re: Inverter Charge issue

What happens if you re-set the configuration to Sealed LA type battery? Voltage should drop to around 14.1

Re: Inverter Charge issue

I would talk with Chris Hanrahan at Tekirs Power Electronics - (888) 483-5747. They are an authorized Xantrex repair station. Chris often has remanufactured units available that are not shown on their website. We got a Freedom 20 reman from him a couple years ago for a pretty reasonable price and it was nice to have a drop-in replacement.

I've considered getting my refurbed. I have to wonder if that is worth it. I'll give your guy a call and see what I find out.

Re: Inverter Charge issue

The economics of repair/refurb are debatable. We did it because it was a drop in replacement and the newer, nicer inverter chargers we liked more would not fit in the space allocated.
