Hot battery

My boat has 3 g31 gel batteries wired together for the house bank. I had an old charger that wasn't working properly so I went ahead and replaced it. The batteries have been on the charger for about 24 hours now and the charger (power charger 12/20 from mastervolt) has moved on to the float stage but still appears to be putting out approximately 10 amps. I have an infrared thermometer and checked the temps on the batteries. 2 of them were around 77f but the third is over 140f. Best I can tell is that battery is from '03, so fairly old, but the other 2 are from 99.

I went ahead and disconnected the hot battery from the bank. I'm guessing since the other 2 batteries were fine, then the 3rd battery was just faulty? I.e. not something wrong with the charger, which appears to be working just fine. Is there anything else I should be watching out for?

Re: Hot battery

Did you set the charger to gel?

Re: Hot battery

Yep, before ever hooking the batteries up. And I triple checked, and just checked again, to make sure

The hot battery appears to be cooling now that it's disconnected, so that's good.

Re: Hot battery

Sounds like you've got a shorted cell then....check it with a volt meter in the morning. I bet it'll be almost flat.

Re: Hot battery

The hot battery has become a very inefficient heater. Take it out of the circuit immediately.

Re: Hot battery

You have an 11 year old battery and 2 15 year old batteries that still work? I wouldn't have changed a thing...

Whatever you had was amazing...

Re: Hot battery

Well technically, one of them didn't still work

The ages of the batteries are just a guess. We've only had the boat for about a month, and it sat for the past 1.5 years pretty much unused. The guy we bought the boat from said he thought the previous owner replaced the batteries in '06 and he hadn't replaced any himself (bought the boat in '08). None of the batteries have a 6 punched out for the sale date, 2 have 9's punched out and one has a 3 punched out. Since he said he didn't put new batteries in himself, I can only assume the 9's are from 99 and the 3 is from '03. I think that's almost absurdly old for batteries, but I have nothing else to go on.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies everyone.
