Honda Genset While Underway?

Anyone charging batteries while on passage with a portable 2kW Honda, or similar? If so, are their limits created by the amount the boat is healing? Other precautions taken?
Thanks!

Re: Honda Genset While Underway?

only one i knew who used genset underway was kharmaseas, the formosa 41 converted to electric motor...without concern as to how to charge motor while underway. he used 2 honda 2 kw generators. he had no solar nor wind generating capabilities.
most of us use engine in darkness to recharge batts as well as for making way.

I do it all the time but not beating to windward. On a reach, if the oil level is kept high then 15 or so degrees of heeling wont trip the low oil level switch.
Works for me in any case. I probably generate under sail at least 6 hours/month in pretty sloppy conditions when coasting N.S.W. OZ.

I do it too, if I need to top off the battery on longer stretches.

It's installed in the aft lazerette with two big blowers.
Additionally I open the lazerette hatch.
2kW create a lot of heat.

It's on my catamaran, so heeling is less of an issue.

Prefer wind and solar though.
