I know this is an old thread, but I don't understand these concerns about putting a HOA on a generator engine. A generator head is nothing but a HOA and they work just fine. Our generator head is connected to the engine by a belt on a power takeoff pulley. Lots of generators are setup this way, and DC generators are exactly this. If the engine can run a 8kw generator head, it can certainly run a 120A alternator.
