Generator output wiring Question

I have a generator with 3 out put wires...two yellow and one red....the yellow are designated DF1/DF2.in the diagram....field I suspect...they go to separate contacts on the VR....the wires are identical ..how do I know which is DF1 and DF2....does DF stand for Drop field?...does it matter which VR contact thye go to...I know this is vague

Assume you are referring to a stand alone alternating current generator, maybe diesel or gas engine powered?

If so, what brand and model? Is it a European model that makes 230V 50Hz or a US model that makes 120V 60 Hz or a US model that makes 240V 60 Hz?
