I have this notion that gel batteries tolerate partial state of charge better than AGMbatteries. Is this just some bad info that got into my head somehow, or is there some validity to this?

Re: Gel batteries tolerate rate PSOC?
Gel batteries usually have a lower rate of self-discharge, so can offer longer life if correctly maintained and charged.
Also, gel batteries can tolerate higher ambient temperatures than AGM, which is why they are better for fitting in or close to engine compartments, e.g. on powerboats.
Anyway, that's the reason we've just fitted a gel bank to our motor yacht.

If so, to what extent?
Chris
This is pretty much true unless we are talking about the new Firefly Carbon Foam AGM. If charged properly gel batteries can last a very, very long time and tolerate PSOC use better than typical AGM's. All lead acid batteries still need to get back to 100% SOC as often as you can..
MAINE Sail,
I was hoping you would chime in. Do you have any idea on how much of a PSOC boost over agm? Yes, the firefly Batts look good, we just did our first install of these on a nice racer/ cruiser without solar or wind, only the alternator or shore power for charging.
