I have a 2kw generstor and am looking at adding a freezer that draws .7-5.5 amps. Along with a small frig Im wondering if the 2kw can handle this

Re: Freezer for tug

Assuming the freezer is drawing up to 5.5 amps at 120 volts, that's about 650 (5.5 x 120) watts. The frig will probably draw less, so your 2,000 watt generator should be up to the task.

Re: Freezer for tug

it's kinda silly to leave it running though. because both will cycle on and off. so either you run the genny every now and then to let the frige and freezer turn on (and guess when it needs to be run) or run it all the time, but sometimes under no load.

a better way to go would be a charger / inverter. let the freezer and fridge run off the inverter. and run the genny to charge the batteries when needed. as it's easier to know when the batteries need charging vrs when the fridge or freezer need to run

Re: Freezer for tug

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Jimorr.

A 2Kw generator can operate 16A intermittent and 13A continuous, at 120V.

Joule’s Law (a permutation of Ohm’s Law): P = IE, I = P ÷ E
I = 2000 ÷ 120 = 16.6A
