If you use a Balmar external regulator, or probably any brand smart regulator, be sure it has good airflow over it. Try not to mount it in a hot engine compartment either. Heat will shorten its life.

Our engines have hitatchi internally regulated alternators, on one of them we use a Xantrex P type smart controller to control the alternator. From what I can tell there is no issue in doing this. We had a alternator fail and go full field, I disconnected the sensing wire and it stopped putting out so we could continue using the engine without damaging the batteries
