Bill, how come the mastec rolls over on "6"x ranges, rather than 1.999 like most meters? Odd, isn't that?

Hmmm.....dunno. Maybe it has something to do with the internal clock rate or the sampling rate chosen for this design.

Yes, I was a bit too quick with that link. I got the meter out and it is model DSA-540A. It does both AC and DC amps, but I see it's at the $95.- price level. It's commonly available.

A Fluke 113 @12V DC has a precision of 2% + 3 so I think the Sperry isn't too bad. For most work, more precision isn't needed.

Yes, the good old 180 series @ 0.025% + 5 accuracy. It will be accurate to within 1/100 of a volt. But we're talking $400-$500 now.

If you look at a 0.8% +3 or so accuracy, what can you do with that which isn't possible with a 1.6% +3?
