DuoGen and dinghy davits

Hi All

I'm looking at renewable energy options for a monohull doing offshore cruising. For general advice I've been through many of the excellent threads on this forum surrounding the debate of solar installation, solar vs wind vs hydro generator etc.

I have a specific question about use of the DuoGen which is primarily a hydrogenerator that can also be raised out of the water to function as a wind generator instead.

I've a question for folk who have DuoGen installed - do you have dinghy davits as well? If you do, do you find the dinghy a problem when you are converting the DuoGen from one mode to the other? How much of a constraint do you find the set up when it comes to raising and lowering the dinghy and/or the DuoGen? For monohull users, given the limited real estate for solar panels, have you found DuoGen to be worth the cost?

Thanks in advance for your advice and feedback.

Did you come to any conclusions on this subject please, Gnilias?

I have the exact same conundrum.

Re: DuoGen and dinghy davits

Hi KompetentKrew
Yes and no. We found the company that makes DuoGen to be very helpful and they advised us on installation / positioning options. However, our boat is currently not lithium and we have decided that a better option for us will be to get a good lithium conversion first. This will significantly cut down the generator running time to take the batteries to 100% so will improve our resilience offshore, albeit we will not have an alternative power source.
Once we have our lithium conversion in place, we will be in a better position to assess our solar / water power generation options and needs. One option we have contemplated is to have solar panels mounted on our Simpson davits, and if we go down this track then the DuoGen is unlikely to be suitable for our situation.
Good luck with your deliberations!

Re: DuoGen and dinghy davits

Hi,
We bought DuoGen before becoming full-time blue water cruisers and were really happy with our purchase. We used it extensively when under way and mostly in water mode. It gave us much needed additional power during night and not so sunny days and helped us to use our autopilot without any need to run our engine to generate power. (We didn't install a windvane.)

However, considering your situation, I would propose two things:
1) install first as much solar panels as is physically possible on your boat and
2) consider a dedicated hydrogenerator (Watt&Sea or SailGen) that is not interfering with your davits or solar setup.
