Dual or single ELCI w/ Shore Power & Onboard Generator

After trawling through any number of websites and posts, I haven't seen any thoughts on this...

Take the case with a boat with both a shore power connection and an onboard fixed marine generator. Only one of which is used at any one time. Could the main/ELCI breaker be placed after the transfer switch? Or are separate ELCI breakers needed before the transfer switch? Assuming circuit breaker(s) and switch are in the same box.

Assuming 10' limits, grounded neutrals, etc. are all handled correctly.

Thanks,

Allan.

Unless your generator and shore power connection are the same amperage each should have their own circuit breaker.

A 30 amp 120 volt power inlet translates to 3600 watts. A 5kw generator is 41 amps.

Re: Dual or single ELCI w/ Shore Power & Onboard Generator

elci is only needed on the shore. gen will have normal breaker.

the shore one needs to be within 10' of boat plug, and the gen one should be right at gen as well. so for that each will likely have it's own, and possible neither of them at the panel
