Delco-Remy alternators 10 and 12 size are 14 pole. ARS-5 is built to accept stator input from Balmar 12 pole configuration. Have tried full range of adjustment on Perkins 4-236 tach, DatCon I think it is, but cannot get accurate RPM reading. Have searched the web, and asked and received no help from companies. Anyone know the answer. Can it be done ? yea or nay.

Change the pulley ratio and try the adjustments again?

Adjust to an easy to remember and full # like +/-500rpm from true and live with it?

Many Balmar alts are 12 pole but the reg really has little to do with it and will accept an AC tap from just about any pole alt. Pulley configuration also messes with the pulses. Either your tach can be adjusted for a 14 pole alt or it can't.. You will want to check with DatCon on the range of adjustment. I use a lot of Faria's today because they have a wide range of adjustment. Are you sure you are adjusting it correctly??? Does it have two adjustment pots?

One possible solution is "TinyTach", inexpensive stand-alone digital tachometer that gets its signal acoustically from a sensor clamped on one of the injection lines. Google it. I plan on buying and installing one. Anyone has experience with Tiny Tach? Care to share? Stan

Using a master tach, determine the actual enginerpm. Adjust the
selector switch for gross calibration (close to actual engine rpm).

Using the proper calibration tool (see instrument label), turn the
calibration "pot" until actual engine rpm is indicated.

After the fine calibration (a few seconds after the final adjustment),
the tach will automatically reset (pointer will sweep around) and
save the calibration set point, indicating a complete calibration.

If the unit does not display the actual engine speed, repeat the
above calibration steps.
