Re: CF Members Battery Survey - 2019

Hello batteries, my old friend
I've come to worship you again
Because your charge state was softly creeping
Left your plates while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I charge you often
Narrow voltages of your lead coffin
'Neath the halo of a LED lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a shorted light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand batteries, maybe more
Batteries charging without gassing
Batteries discharging without sulfating
Batteries providing power that boaters never share
And no one dares
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Flooded lead acid batteries like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my AGMs that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of battery cells

And the people bowed and prayed
To the LifePO4 battery God they made
And the battery monitor flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming

And the monitor said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the seaway walls
And in harbor bars
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence

Re: CF Members Battery Survey - 2019

Just bought two LiFePO4, although they have not actually arrived yet. The 7 y/o FLA have reached the diminished-capacity stage. OK for a daysail, but not for a cruise.

Since the venerable Atomic 4 starts on 125 amps or less, I'm thinking of not even having a "start" battery this go-round.

Re: CF Members Battery Survey - 2019

We have 3 Sam's Club - (now) Duracell, (was) Eveready - East Penn - 12V group 31/group 29 "deep cycle" batteries in the house bank of our cruising boat. We swap them for new every three years moving the old batteries to the day use boats or to the truck we own. In 15 years of doing this and cruising on the boat 5 or 6 months a year, we have had only one battery failure which was a shorted cell. I voted Ordinary flooded lead acid (FLA) batteries (probably 12v). The starting battery is AGM because it is difficult to access for maintenance.

Sailorboy1, I love it. Simon and Garfunkel would be turning over in their anchorages.

American Battery (3) DSCX 130 ah each, 12V, fla, 2014, still OK, I do a manual spreadsheet forum and track amps and ah on my Link 2000 to confirm operation vs. expectations. Then I sit back and relax and crack a cold one!
Local sailing and regular anchor outs in Northern California from 2014 to 2016, trip up the coast in 2016, Gulf Islands and San Juans since.

8 six volt Duracell Golf Carts from Sam's. (Thanks to Maine Sail for the heads up.) 6 years old still doing the job but haven't tested them this year.

I guessed correctly, but started by putting in lifepo and changing....
Sorted.

1 Trojan T-1275 12v deep cycle, 150amp-hr. Golf-cart battery.

Shortly will add a 2nd.
In the medium to long-term will add a 3rd & 4th.
Yep, 600amp-hr on a 20' boat, I want to be able to motor significant distances on electrical power.

Re: CF Members Survey - Batteries Used Currently - 2019

Trojan 8D-AGM Marine Battery
8 x 8D-AGM 12V 230Ah / Series/Parallel = 920 AH @ 24v

This is my 2nd set of AGMs and I am only getting 4 years out of them
Not happy and trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, or perhaps it is just a high temperature thing.

Will start a new thread to explore if perhaps next set should be Gel.Click image for larger version

Re: CF Members Survey - Batteries Used Currently - 2019

Five Concorde Lifeline GPL-27T AGM batteries wired in parallel in one bank, installed in 2010.

They replaced Five Concorde Lifeline GPL-27T AGM batts that had been in place since November 2000 and had been in use while cruising (and with very little dock power and accidentally pulled down to low SoC at least twice).
