Re: Case Study:Diesel AC Gen to DC Gen- Larger boat

if you fully load / use the 12k gen.

then you'd need a 500a 24v DC charger to be the same power. and then you'd need 12kw of inverters. or convert AC loads to DC loads like you mention for the water maker.

the gen would be the same power / size. to produce the same total power.

the only reason you could get a smaller DC gen is if you don't currently load up the 12k gen. at which case you could just get a smaller AC one isntead.

Re: Case Study:Diesel AC Gen to DC Gen- Larger boat

Sorry so late to the party, overate T-day and lazy, so sorry haven't parsed just skimmed, couple hot takes.

OP says no belts, means direct coupled, to me that means EcoTech, only one that outputs big amps at such low rpm, plus simplicity. Run watermaker, biggest inverter loads like laundry, maybe holding plate charging at the same time.

7 kW of torque will require more than 12HP.

Ask the EcoTech guy for reco's.

If a good HD serpentine setup I doubt belts a problem myself. In which case can run two 2 alts for redundancy and low sideload, can still go EcoTech, not *that* big a deal to ship for repair/exchange if one goes south. But other alts like that 400A Humvee for $500 or a stock LN is now possible

Watermaker and holding plates can also be direct driven rather than electric.

With the advances in refer systems there is no reason to go engine driven. And many to go electric. With some solar to keep up with refer loads when away from vessel for more than an afternoon.

just go single 110AC unit with r 400. 12 volt dc system or just a 24 volt system with r400 ( if you are a 24 volt boat)
