cables from batteries to engine and control panel

Hi, my yard suggested that i replace the ground wires and lines from batteries to the engine and power panel. Said it was a simple job. I understood that I just follow the lines and cut the proper size wire to length and connect. What are some suggestions to this process. I know I should get some tools like crimpers and cutters. I am familiar with wiring small stuff like lights and pumps etc but never tackled something like this. would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

A good crimping tool and cutter make the job a lot easier. Although it might be cheaper to outsource it as some shops offer cutting and crimping at very reasonable prices.

There is a shop in Brunswick Georgia called Genuine Deals who will make you new cables for a very reasonable price. Measure the length, the stud size and the amps which will be needed.
Lots of info at Blue Sea Systems and books.
Great improvement on your boat to do by yourself.
Happy trails to you.

Re: cables from batteries to engine and control panel

Most West Marine stores have a crimper on site that works well with battery cable ends. I like to put a bit of flux on the bare cable then solder after crimping with a propane torch, along with a good thick shrink tubing. Mostly just to keep corrosion out of the exposed copper.
Double check what cable size/diameter should be by measuring length ROUND TRIP. ROUND UP!
Your cable to the panel may not need to be as big as for the engine starting.
Watch your routing so a cable doesn't rub through and cause a fire.

I prefer to crimp mine on site because often, at least in the case of heavy gauge and shorter cables, it helps get the lugs oriented to reduce strain on the cables.
