Cable Size Needed?

We have a Maxwell 3500 24 volt windlass. We have a set of deep cycle 24 volt batteries within 10 feet of the windlass,that runs it.

We have a set of old but good heavy 1/0 or 2/0 cables from the previous 12 volt windlass and we'd like to hook it to the engine mounted 24 volt/250 amp alternator.

What size cables are necessary to connect the 24 volt engine alternator to charge and run the windlass up forward?

Any suggestions on how to make connections at both ends for charging and running?

Is it necessary to keep the cable size the same throughout?

The run from bow to engine is within 50 ft. taking into account the route it will
take through the boat (windlass to engine room).
