best way for solar

I have a fly bridge MY. with a hardtop on the fly bridge. I plan on 3 or 4 275to 300watt solar panels on the hardtop and a mppt controller. My question is.... do I mount the controller in the fly bridge console with a long wire run to the batteries in the bilge or. Make the long run from the panels to the controller and a shorter run to the batteries?

Re: best way for solar

When I did my boat, one of the experts on the site suggested I read the following blog. I did. I took the advice and for once in my life everything works as it should do. You can hire this guy for about$100 an hour if you want personal advice on your set up.

My words of wisdom, beware of shadows, even small ones knock the output way down.

anyway for what its worth. HandyBob's Blog « Making off grid RV electrical systems work

Re: best way for solar

Normally the higher voltage/less amperage should be the longest set of wires.

If you look at the power grid run into neighborhoods and business you'll see high power (small) wires that run into transformers, and from there heavier wires low voltage that runs into the buildings.

Amps are like water running through pipes. The more amps (water), the bigger the wire (pipe) needs to be.

So, when you kick up the amps to charge the batteries you'll want larger wires. This is why some go to 24 & 36 volt solar panels, to make longer runs on smaller wire.

Plus, you'll want to get your MPPT out of the humidity/weather but yet give it cooling space.
