Re: battery question(s)

What do you do with the dried up poop… and what about the pee?

Depends. If you’ll be 3 miles or more out, they can go overboard. If I’m headed into dock then into a shore toilet. If you garden and compost at home, you can use the humanure for your non-edible plants.

Re: battery question(s)

Coffee chaff? What a great idea, wgerstmyer.

We've been using peat moss to sprinkle on the poo. Dries it out. No odors. We empty the tank a few times each summer into a trash bag, the into the marina dumpster.

BTW, should your boat have a holding tank, you can plumb the liquids directly to that and not have to empty so often.

And I agree with Mike O: get Don Casey's book on electronics, take your time and explore your boat's electrical system. You'll figure it out and maybe even find a few things that need improvement (like missing fuses, undersized wiring and corroded, unsealed connections).

Then again, I always agree with Mike O. He's as competent as he is generous with his experience and a real resource for all us amateurs. Thanks Mike!

18 days to my launch up here in Maine. Yippee!!

Re: battery question(s)

I have this same "composting" head installed on my sailboat, installed 1.5 years ago. I have been very happy with it. The fan power draw is negligible, in the mA range. I have connected it directly to the house bank. The main draw is when you press the button to stir the solids, but even then, it is a very small power draw.

For those wondering about usage and dealing with waste, there is definitely a learning curve and some period for adjusting some habits (similar to when using marine heads for the first time). I was definitely a skeptic at first, but after dealing with holding tanks, sanitation hoses and pumps I decided to give it a go, I'm not going back. The system is really simple and, if you are not grossed out by managing/maintaining the standard marine heads, managing the waste generated on a system, like the Oggo, is a walk on the park, literally, the solids smell like soil and you never get in contact with it.

Cheers

I've always used coir (compressed coconut husk). It is easy to get, and pretty cheap. But I like the idea of using coffee grounds. It would have to be dried first, but I love the smell of coffee -- who doesn't .
