Basic DIY Lightning Protection?

In anticipation of bad weather and in the absence of any professional lightning strike protection on my boat yet, I recently got suggested to hang a heavy-duty jumper cable from my stay into the water.

What do you think about that as a temporary better-than-nothing solution?

Not a great solution. Would suggest doing some reading on how lightning gets to ground ( actually, sea surface in our case on boats), and getting adequate conductor to provide that path.
Aluminium mast with large surface area will be better path than shroud in stainless.
Can you get large conductor from mast base to sea surface?

Well, I surely could attach the jumper cable to the aluminium mast base instead to the stainless stay and hang the other end overboard if you mean that?
