Hi,

Anyone recognise this plug? Havent got around to tracing the wires yet, but its thick wire.

Plug is at the chart table. Plug has american power products printed on it.

That style plug is used in APC uninterrupted power supplies - as used for PC’s.
they are usually on the replaceable Gel cells in the UPS and as that is the male plug it would be used to receive the female socket on a battery.
Unless it’s been wired incorrectly in terms of its purpose.

What the heck would that be doing on the boat? Cant imagine the previous owner being the sort to have a UPS wired up?!?!?

Some years ago I was asked by a yacht owner to install a PC and on testing the 12 boat power supply found it VERY spiky when heavy current consumers were operating ( autopilot hydraulic pump for one ) also the alternator charging produced nasty spikes - hence I used a UPS frame with its 12volt inverter to power the PC - the one I used had that connector for its external power input ( although the other sex)
Or it could just have been a convenient connector for a 12v power source.

That is an Anderson plug. In Australia it is in very common use as a safe and reliable connector for 12v systems especially in high amp applications. Most often used in 4wd, camper trailer, caravan systems but no reason not to use on boats.

+2 i have on on my inverter ~100amp,also common for winch connections on trailers with a hydralic lift pump system powered by the vehicle battery.

+3, its an Andersen Plug, sometimes used on battery chargers and also used on roof top solar systems.

My previous boats had that plug factory installed as a remote source to jump start in case of dead batteries.

I’d guess it was for an inverter that you could unplug and take home, although why would you want to do that?

They are useful for any high amp load.

DCDC charging of a dedicated nav/comm battery, even a Yeti / Kodiak style portable powerpak.

Portable stereo rig, I had one used 1000+W fit in a Pelican case.

Maybe a little heat source. . .
