Alternator (voltage regulator) questions........

Back to the forum for expert and real world advise.....

Regarding voltage regulators and smart charging....

Is an external voltage regulator necessary or desirable for smaller output alternators?

Is there any big gains in efficiency over stock internal voltage regulators?

I am thinking that with higher output alternators it is probably a good idea. But what about a smaller stock alternator at say 75amps?

And finally, three (or more) phase charging and voltages are slightly different depending on your battery. Are there any advantages to external voltage regulators for charging AGM's for example?

Is the external voltage regulator programmable for AGM's vs. Flooded leads acid...etc?

Thanks in advance.

Go onto the WWW and search for MaineSail aka pbbase. He is the smartest guy on all things related to marine electric. His designs are the de facto designs of many updates on older boats.

Be sure to “do the right thing”, after you learn from all his research, make a donation! For the record— not related to him
