Alternator squeals when field turned on

Hi boat yard dog, no its not connected direct to the alternator it is in the on/off wire to the regulator

If the belt has been slipping, take sandpaper to the alt pulley and the driver pulley to give it some tooth.

I think more like fine wet paper, only to remove a glaze.

You might want to consider the squeal could be an electronic squeal due to a failed diode or two. Back emf can cause weird sounds in automobiles. The squeal might go away as the battery charges a bit as the load comes off the alternator.
