Alternator functioning properly?

How do I test the Stator portion of a 12 v Alt? Use a VOM...what probes to where?

I'm trying determine if its my alternator or external regulator that is the problem.

Rebuilt 12 v alt with regulator removed. and an Aqualine regulator. I do not get a lite on the regulator that indicates the Stator is functioning, thus the alternator does not charge.

Yes...I ran a wire from Field connection on Alt to 12V +, the alt fires up just like it should making me suspect that its a bad regulator. But I cant find any data, that I can understand that explains testing the stator side of the alt.

Thanks, Bob

Re: Alternator functioning properly?

If the alt charges with 12v temporaly put on its feild input. The the alt is good and it’s a reg or reg wiring issue.

Re: Alternator functioning properly?

The stator is the fixed ring, inside the alternator.
To test the stator windings, with the ohmmeter on the lowest settings, test between each of the [3] terminals.
There should be very low resistance [continuity].
Test between each of the the terminals and the stator frame, and there should be no connection [infinite resistance].

Re: Alternator functioning properly?

I'm not good enough to tear the alt apart and get it back together correctly.
This is a Delco 10si alt with the reg removed. The terminals on the back/side are field, stator and 12 volt +.

Should I get some kind of reading from the stator term to:
GROUND ?
12V +?
Something , either voltage of resistance?

Thanks, Bob

Re: Alternator functioning properly?

Stator term to Ground should read open [NO short/continuity] - infinite Ω.

Re: Alternator functioning properly?

Stator output just feeds a tach. But rarely used as most boats use flywheel sensors. It will only output if the alt is charging. It’s probably an ac sine wave but I’m not sure. So Some boats lose their tach when the alt fails.

To get it charging it sounds like you need a new reg.

The field input makes the alt charge. The stator output just shows that it is charging.
