alternative to cigarettel lighter style plugs

What is a good alternative to the standard 12v cigarette lighter outlet plugs?

I have also heard Anderson, Merit, and Powerlet. Some of the tech is borrowed from motorcyclists using heated gear and HAM radio operators.

If you care to (not to ) relive my misadventure of wiring a 12 VDC socket backwards and roasting the next USB plug:

Funny pic from the thread. Hope all stay safe!

We use the plugs that are used for electric trolling engines.

Re: alternative to cigarettel lighter style plugs

First question is what do you use them for?

I use 50 Anderson plugs for the fridge and solar blanket running nice heavy wires and a 2 pin waterproof marine socket with optional screw down collared plug good for about 20A for critical stuff like the spotlight that I don't want to easily pull out (see photo), and dedicated USB outlets. You probably still need to retain some cigarette lighter sockets but these are really only used for stuff that comes with the matching plug that doesn't warrant swapping out.

For what purpose? What is the load? Is it exposed to weather? Does it need to survive repeated connection/disconnect?

Absent the above, any answer is meaningless

Don't forget the spiffy little panel mount bezel :-) Part #: GTIN: 840128902479

Re: alternative to cigarettel lighter style plugs

We've replaced some of the cigarette lighter plugs with USB charge plugs.

Cheers, RickG

I use SAE plugs with weather caps. Never had a failure.

Re: alternative to cigarettel lighter style plugs

Thanks guys. Right now, I just want to replace a couple poorly placed, ineffectual fans that are in my cabin with 12v outlets that I can plug a larger better fan into (boundless breeze rv fan). It comes with a cigarette lighter plug, but I'd prefer to replace it with a smaller, better plug.

The first reply was a good one. Consider Anderson PowerPole, available in three current/wire diameter variants for up to 15, 30 and 45 A, all interchangeable. Only one hermaphroditic plug type.
I have already converted a lot of 12V connections on the boat to PowerPoles.
