Connect the additional batts in series. Then connect that series in parallel with your existing ones. One pair you can think of as a 12v battery. The other pair is also equivelant to a 12v battery. To put them in parallel, connect the end positive terminals together, and connect the end negative twrminals together. But I recommend that you keep the new ones in a separate bank. Don't mix old and new, for best results.

Re: Adding batteries 2

Google "trojan battery user's guide". Download it and keep it for future reference. Great little guide for us electrically challenged folks.

To make a 12v battery from two 6v batteries, connect the pos of one to the neg of the other. But you already knew that. You may now treat the pair as a single 12v battery. Notice that you have one unconnected pos and one unconnected neg.

To connect 2 12v batteries, connect the neg of one to the neg of the other, and the pos of one to the pos of the other.

If you get the guide you will find an illustration of the above instructions....

Re: Adding batteries 2

Slater-
If your existing batteries are fairly new, adding two more is pretty much OK, the differences in them won't be great. If they are old, or don't come up to full voltage, then by all means the new ones should be in a separate bank.
But if you can survive with using the existing batteries until they are shot, and then you replace the entire bank with one newer larger bank, you will have a better system overall and get a better return on your money.
Just something to think about, not knowing your circumstances or the battery condition.
