600 to 1000 watt inverter recommendation

I've got a real low tech sailboat and am looking for a small inverter, basically to run a computer, but also an electric drill occasionally.

I was set to buy the Xantrex 600 watt model, pure wave, but then read on the forum that they were "crap" ...was the word.

I got $150 US to spend, otherwise, there are huge import duties. Anyone have experience with a little unit that is a quality-built and easy to install?

I've been using the west marine 1000w cheapo inverter for over two years continously to power 2 laptops, two 22 inch lcd monitors, wifi AP, 2 8 port switches, and a linux desktop pc. I also use it to power the kegerator/deck fridge and ice maker when out of port. It has pulled all that equipment at the same time. So far so good.

I originally bought the 1000w unit as proof of concept expecting to upgrade to a 3000W pure sine wave, but with the performance and cheap cost of the 1000w unit, I cant justify the expense of the 3000w pure sine wave

Sailorboy: Not sure what "SN" refers to. Love to read a review of small inverters if there is one.

neptunesjester: Thanx again for the info on the West unit. They only list the 3000 Watt model on their website. They may not be selling the smaller units any longer. I'll shoot them off an e-mail and see if I can find out.

If the drill is battery powered, the lower watt will be fine for it's low amp recharge station, cell phone charger, and the laptop.
Bigger concern is battery bank size and charge source for it.
