2x6volt and 12 volt charger

I'm really wishing there was a search function attached to this forum. My question is simply if I attach 2 6 volt batteries in series am I able to charge them together as a 12 volt battery?
Thank you for your mercy and your knowledge.

Re: 2x6volt and 12 volt charger

Answer to question: Yes, you can do this.

And BtW, there are actually two separate search functions for the forum. In the blue banner across the top of the home page there is a "search" button. This will bring up a menu which includes both a forum search and a custom Google search. The former is pretty useless, but the Google search is reasonably sophisticated and useful, and will usually find an appropriate post or thread.

the answer is yes in series these batteries will become a single 12v cell assuming they are identical batteries.

the AH rating will remain the same,but voltage is doubled,ie 6v@225AH +6v@225AH = 12v @225AH

ideally the smart charger should be rated at 10-25% of capacity, or 22Amp-55Amp for a 225AH bank with float charge about 13.8v and boost about 14.4v for flooded lead acid batteries

Re: 2x6volt and 12 volt charger

FYI, the batteries you buy in either 6v or 12v are actually 2volt cells wired in series and stuffed into a single box. Two golf cart batteries are just two of those 3 cell batteries in a box hooked together to get 12v much the same as a 12v battery is 6 2v cells only in one box. The key is wired in series, positive terminal wired to negative, which doubles the voltage while the amperage remains the same. If they are wired in parallel, positive to positive and negative to negative, the voltage remains the same but the amps are doubled.
