110 outlets not working

I have a 1987 Pearson 33 and the 110V AC outlets stopped working. Is there a fuse somewhere that I shouid be checking that would relate to these? Newish to sailing....very new to boat ownership...clueless with electrical.

There most likely is a resettable circuit breaker, should be on the panel with all the other circuit breakers. Find it and turn it off and then back on and see if it helps. Some don’t go all the way off when they trip, they sort of go halfway and at a glance it may look on.
Does anything else that is AC powered work, like the battery Charger?

Look for an outlet that is GFI. That needs reset. It was common to run from the breaker to the GFI outlet and then to the others. GFI trips all are dead.

There could be 3 or more breakers in your system
1 The dock pedestal
2 The 110v inlet on the boat may have a breaker switch next to it or near it
3. The main circuit panel on your boat may have a breaker switch


If you use an inverter charger it too make have a re-set button if it somehow overheated or had a big enough spike.


Also your boat outlets may have GFCI outlets to check, and of course if using an in line power board it may too have a reset button, plus the device itself.

My Pearson has meters on the electric panel for AC and DC. Does yours have the same? If so, first step is to look at the meter for the AC to confirm that you have power to the circuits.

The breaker panel has a two switches for outlets, port and starboard side. Check those and as suggested turn them off and back on.

AND the hidden bit, the GFI. Look at the outlets and look for one that has two little buttons on it. One is a test and if set, will cause the other to pop out. If you push test and the other button is already popped out then you've found the problem. Push it back in and you should be good to go.

Also check this. I had some 110 outlets that wouldn't work. I put a meter on one and found that it showed 50v.

After checking the internet, I found that happens when the neutral wire (white) is disconnected. I found it to be the issue with my outlets.

If you are not connected to dock power, you are running your 110 volt system on an inverter, a device that converts 12 volts DC to 110 volts AC.

Inverters have limited capacity. If you try and run appliances that draw a lot of current: hair dryers, coffee makers, toasters, anything that produces heat, power saws, etc.; you can easily trip the built in circuit breaker on the inverter.

While we would like all the conveniences of home, we often have to figure out other ways to get things done.

This has been the most common reason for us to loose AC power on our outlets. Trying to run too many items and drawing too much current. The reset button trips on the inverter/charger. Ours is located under the nav seat. I watch our AC panel and try not to go beyond 15A continous at all for power consumption.

I suspect that your 1987 vessel does not have GFI plug's, easy to do the upgrade, replace with a GFI plug, the first GFI plug will protect up to 3 plug's down the line, so not need to replace all of the plug's, depending how the plug's are wired, possibly there could be a separate circuit port and stb., you could be on the safe side and replace on each side.

I have a 1984 Pearson that has GFI plugs, one protecting the port outlets and one for starboard. Never even noticed until I lost power in the outlets and found it when trouble shooting.

Since the PO couldn't tell AC from AM I doubt he did any upgrades to the system so pretty sure it was original from the factory.

My boat has an AC breaker between the plug and the distribution panel. It is in the aft sail locker where the contents occasionally jostle it off. If the other AC circuits are powered, this is NOT the source of your problem.
