Re: Wifi booster, do you have one?
Yes I do and it works very well.
Mine is a Costal Marine Wifi booster made in Canada.
I have streamed Netflix from 4 nautical miles from the source.
Further boats that were close by were given the password to my modem and enjoyed the Internet as well.
A great investment.
Don't leave home without one.

Re: Wifi booster, do you have one?
As you might imagine, in these "interconnected days" the subject has been discussed just a few times before. As Steady Hnd has reminded us before, a Google search on this forum's excellent engine will show you many if not all of those discussions, most of which have occurred very recently, so obsolescence is not an issue. Try "wifi booster"
Good luck, we've used our Alpha for more than three years, excellent reception, although there are newer units that work better.
One of the major issues is that most private wifis are protected nowadays, so it makes more sense for many to use their phones as hotspots, obviating the need for a booster.
Have you looked at Panbo: The Marine Electronics Hub
Good luck.

Scottster it would be really nice to see the Antena mount you used on the back of your solar panels and how you attached to your unique aluminum channel. and thanks for the Phil Morris contact! He was so patient trying to explain the xyz's to a person that has trouble with the abc's of all this electronic stuff!

I wonder the same thing, and get quite angry when our network gets tampered with in Massachusetts by some thief. When traveling, we purchase our own via SIM cards.
Most folks these days have secured networks, leaving the thieves fewer and fewer options. We never even bother to tap into the free Wifi in marinas which is usually crap anyway.

For the many avarice driven "it's mine" individuals out there, a lot of us have open systems because we don't mind sharing.
It's Ma Bell that profits most from a tax dollar built system.

Re: Wifi booster, do you have one?
in the Eastern US, many new modems issued by Comcast has an open wifi port that is usable by any customer. There are literally dozens around ports and anchorages I have been to and am happy to take advantage of the best with my antenna...no theft there.
Then there are the town wifis that are available to cruisers, no theft there.
Then there is the wifi you pay for at the marina you are staying at and need the antenna to get a usable signal....no theft there.
There are also open wifi signals near libraries and other public use ones where I would rather sit on my boat than always have to go there...no theft there.

Do you lock the doors of your house and take the keys out of the cars ignition?
Why wouldn't you do the same for your modem/computer?

"usable by any customer" I don't think you would be considered a customer. I'd consider it theft

Firewalls on your computer or your network do not mandate having an locked router.

Re: Wifi booster, do you have one?
to get wifi cruising, you NEED one. otherwise you donot get the signal much less the connection.
here we are not able to precede the modem in use, so it is not theft. with permission from the owners of signal and the key to the connection(password), one can do anything. well, almost-- as long a sthe office modem doesnt need to be reset .
sounds like the ones thinking that using a booster is theft neeed to go back to wifi school. or better yet-- get out of the house and go cruising to see what the real world is about.

When I or most others pay for something.... Yes "it's mine," and I prefer others ask before they take it upon themselves to "share."
